The beautiful, young and carefree Sara has spent an interim year on the African island nation of Mauritius. After starting an adult life in London, she returns to London for a friend’s wedding. When a series of accidents with her ex-boyfriend, Jackson, is in a prop plane on his way to a nearby island where the wedding is taking place, the pilot suddenly dies. Above an endless ocean. The festive trip has suddenly turned into a mad flight of storms, resentment and endless bad luck, while she doesn’t have much more than a few forgotten flying lessons and a case of local rum. This can only end badly.
If it does end badly — no spoilers here, of course — it certainly seems to rhyme with the Bad Beginning. In a handful of scenes of about a minute each, a situation and a few characters are equivocated. It goes with the subtlety and creativity of an action film from the 1980s. This string of predictable one liners, sawed-off shots, and outdated stereotypes will make you feel relieved when the slightly unhealthy-looking pilot gets the touching-arm plane off the ground, with Sara and Jackson alone as passengers. Unfortunately, the antique tinplate turns out to be the only thing that is rising at the time.
For example, you could hope that at that moment the film will focus on Sara and her life choices. After all, she chose to leave her boyfriend and the relaxed atmosphere to work on her career in London. Wasn’t the carefree beach with the badass Jackson much nicer than the generic marketing title on her business card? But now that her end seems to appear on the horizon, she does not seem to have the time to question such matters, or to discuss them further with Jackson. For an hour, the two are only busy keeping the winged coffin in the air, with which something else is wrong every five minutes.
The engine breaks down, the radio breaks down, their phones break down, someone breaks an arm climbing on the wing: you can’t make it up so stupid that it’s only used to keep the film in the air for 90 minutes. Fortunately, the two are helped by bizarre amounts of coincidence, insane assumptions and inexplicable inventiveness. The action scenes lack conviction and creativity, while acting is the most reminiscent of mediocre stewardess porn.
It will never be exciting or compelling, and the only way to get through time is to predict what the next five-minute crisis will be. In the end, Horizon Line is a film about an uninteresting duo, which ends up in a potentially interesting situation without any obvious reason, but then experiences it as uninteresting as possible. At a time like this, the financial support of your favorite movie house seems to be the only legitimate reason to leave Horizon Line.
